The World Islands in Dubai are a construction and engineering wonder, they’re also mostly deserted islands. These man-made islands, which cost an estimated $14 Billion to build, were constructed via a method called “land reclamation”. In 2003, Sheikh Mohammed unveiled The World Islands. This mega project was planned to consist of nearly 300 small, artificial islands constructed to resemble a map of the world. Located in the waters of the Persian Gulf, just 4 kilometers off the coast of Dubai, the construction of the World Islands began in September 2003.

The islands were to be composed of nearly 321 million cubic meters of sand dredged from Dubai’s shallow coastal waters and 31 million metric tons of rock, all of which would be surrounded by an oval-shaped breakwater island. A vast majority of the islands were purchased by large commercial groups. However, fast forward to today, and most of The World Islands are still empty and there is hardly any development. In fact, there are only 2 or 3 islands that are completely functional and available for commercial use. 17 years and $14 billion later, the 300 artificial islands now sit vacant, most of them bare and completely undeveloped. So what happened with this extraordinary project? Did it fail? Or is there still hope?

Today, although the status of the World islands remains uncertain, development work has started on a few islands. The most noticeable project currently being built in The World Islands is the $5 billion dollar Heart of Europe project being developed by the Kleindienst Group. This ambitious project aims to develop European-themed luxury tourist resort that will have many attractions including a Raining Street, where it will rain artificially whenever the temperature rises above 27 degrees Celsius, an outdoor snow plaza, and the first underwater hotel. The Phase One opening of the Heart of Europe will consist of Sweden Beach Palaces, Germany Villas, heart-shaped Honeymoon Island, Portofino Hotel and the Cote d’Azur Resort.
