Road Through Empty Quarter | Rub al Khali | Road connecting KSA and Oman | Empty Quarter | FacTi

The terrain is covered with sand dunes with heights up to 250 meters. The desert is 1,000 kilometers long and 500 kilometers wide. Yes, we are talking about “Empty Quarter”. “Empty Quarter” is the sand desert encompassing most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula. The desert covers about 650,000 km2 including parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The Rubʿ al-Khali is the largest area of continuous sand in the world. Did you know? Nowadays some drillings in the Rub’ Al-Khali that brought underground water to the surface give an idea of how it could have looked during more humid periods. Fact 5: It is believed that entering the desert without a guide is a step leading to imminent death, because of scarce water resources, extreme heat and inescapable mazes of sand, a type of which the human body can get immersed in up until the knees. ‘One who can exit it, must be born again, while those inside, remain missing,’ Fact 6: IIts sandy elevations could match the mountains in their high altitude, some of which may reach more than 450 meters. Fact 7: In 1931, Brit Bertram Thomas became the first Western explorer to cross the Rubʿ al Khali, a challenging feat across 1,300km that took 59 days and wasn’t repeated until 2016 when British explorer Mark Evans followe
