THE $12 BILLION PALM ISLAND OF DUBAI!! Updated for 2024

Updated: March 21, 2024

Palm Jumeirah in Dubai is the world’s largest man-made island and features sea-view apartments, beach-front villas, and opulent high-rises that attract the world’s wealthiest. But most impressive are the city’s man-made archipelagos, all in various stages of completion: Palm Jumeirah, Deira Islands, Palm Jebel Ali, The World, and Bluewaters Island. Developers used sand from the seabeds below and rocks from the mountains to construct the base and the land. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the United Arab Emirates’ prime minister and Emir of Dubai, is the mastermind behind these massive projects, which are meant to pique tourism and expand Dubai’s coastline. His vision totally changed Dubai from a desert to a money making field, and the future Europe.

You can actually spot the Palm all the way from space– its unique shape is hard to miss. The Pointe by Nakheel which features one of the world’s biggest fountains, and the incredible Boardwalk which takes you around the crescent and offers you a spectacular look at the complicated island. It’s also home to the Lost Chambers Aquarium at the famed Atlantis Hotel, where a stay in their Royal Bridge Suite will cost at least $25,000 per night. The island has been such a success that there are even plans to make two more, Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira, also known as Deira Islands. Check out our video for all the details on building– and living on– one of the world’s most unique islands.

So just how were the islands made? A process called land reclamation, which involves dredging sand from the Persian and Arabian Gulf’s floors. The sand was then sprayed and “vibro-compacted” into shape using GPS technology for precision and surrounded by millions of tons of rock for protection.
