The Story Behind the Story: Uncovering the National Pavilion UAE’s Hidden Legacy

In 2020, Asma Bukhammas, Instructor at the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University Dubai, led a studio on Safa Park during the early months of COVID-19, inviting students to explore personal and collective memories tied to the park’s redevelopment.

The brief challenged students to imagine two structures, one old and one new, at the park’s edge, sparking reflections on what gets preserved or lost in a rapidly changing city.

The project builds on the legacy of the 2014 National Pavilion UAE, continuing to shape how memory and place inform design thinking in the Gulf.

في عام 2020، قادت أسماء بوخماس، المحاضرة في كلية الفنون والصناعات الإبداعية بجامعة زايد في دبي، مساقًا دراسيًا حول حديقة الصفا خلال الأشهر الأولى من جائحة كوفيد-19، حيث دعت الطالبات لاستكشاف الذكريات الشخصية والجماعية المرتبطة بإعادة تطوير الحديقة.

تضمن التكليف تحديًا للطالبات لتخيل هيكلين معماريين عند حافة الحديقة؛ أحدهما قديم والآخر حديث، مما أثار تساؤلات حول ما يتم الحفاظ عليه وما يُفقد في مدينة تتغير وتتطور بوتيرة متسارعة.

يستمد هذا المشروع قيمته من إرث مشاركة الجناح الوطني لدولة الإمارات في عام 2014، ويواصل المساهمة في صياغة دور الذاكرة والمكان في توجيه التفكير التصميمي في منطقة الخليج.
