Farha’s kitchen and vlogs

Welcome friends to my new vlog. Today I’m going to show you to the ultimate tourist attraction and heaven of thousands of birds and flamingos The Ras Al Khor Wildlife sanctuary-A birdwatchers paradise.

Right in the heart of Dubai is a haven for some of the most magnificent birds in the region. Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary boasts different ecosystems including mangroves, mudflats, lagoons, sabkhas, reed beds and scrubland, all before the backdrop of Downtown Dubai’s ultra-modern skyline. The spot is perfect for bird watching, hosting around 67 different species, including those migrating to and from East Africa. The most popular among visitors are the flamingos, grey herons, and the great egrets.

You can observe these birds from three strategically-located hides (concealed viewing points), one of which is on the western edge of the sanctuary overlooking the flamingo roost, whilst the other two can be found on the southern edge near Al Buhaira Lagoon and the mangrove forest. The Sanctuary was the first in the UAE to be recognised by the Ramsar Convention and has also been identified as a globally Important Bird Area (IBA) by Birdlife International.

This wetland is a breeding place and habitat for mammals, crustaceans, and fish. The pink flamingos are the main attraction here in winter. Other birds seen here in winter include the great egrets, grey herons, cormorants, reef herons, and black-winged stilts, amongst others.
Two bird hides on the border of the sanctuary stay open to the public between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Both are equipped with really sharp binoculars. Visitors can watch birds as they feed and fly.
Flamingos that include the elusive Greater Flamingo rest near the western hide. Visitors can watch the flamingos feed greedily as park rangers feed them between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

They will be surprised to see how flamingos share their reserve with different bird species. Some of them are:

Eagles

Ringed Plovers

Pintails

Kingfishers

Teal

Snipe

These species throng the hide fora taste of the queen-fish and the milk-fish in the waters.

Opening hours: Saturday to Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM;

Entrance fees: Free
