Ras Al Khor Wildlife Bird Sanctuary | Flamingos | Mangroves | Raw Video | Dubai

In the wetlands, right in the heart of Dubai, we have Ras Al Khor Wildlife Bird Sanctuary, just meters away from the bustling city of Dubai, you’ll find this Sanctuary. You can see the marshy land here, all before the backdrop of Downtown Dubai ultra-modern skyline. One good thing, there is no entrance fee to Ras Al Khor Bird Sanctuary. Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary boasts different ecosystems including mangroves, mudflats, lagoons, sabkhas, red beds and scrubland. Ras Al Khor is closely monitored and protected by the Dubai Municipality and the sanctuary is fenced off to safeguard the area. And there is a big board over here which displays the list of DONTS at this bird sanctuary. You can observe these birds from three strategically located hides, one of which is on the western edge of the sanctuary overlooking the flamingo roost, where we are currently. There are six different species of flamingos in the world and the ones you’ll see at Ras Al Khor wildlife sanctuary are Greater Flamingos, a species native to the UAE. Flamingos are basically filter feeders and they use their beaks to strain out algae and small crustaceans from water and “how they get their pink colour” – is because of the algae and shrimp which metabolizes the pigments, turning their feathers pink.
