RAS AL KHAWR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, DUBAI

This well-protected wildlife sanctuary in Ras Al Khawr lies just off the Dubai – Al Ain Road and is also adjacent to the Dubai – Hatta Road.

While many species of birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, rodents and insects live and thrive here, the biggest attraction here are the flamingos. Many of the flamingos here are migratory, though quite many are residents here.

There is a well-maintained and unobtrusive observation deck here, equipped with powerful telescopes to view and study these birds. Visitors can come here all year round, though care is taken to ensure that the viewing cottage is never overcrowded and that all visitors get sufficient time and opportunity to view the flamingos.

Apart from natural food resources available in this creek, the flamingos are fed twice a day, at 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. and it is best to visit the observation deck at these times.

While adult flamingos, especially the mated pairs, fly in to get the first servings, younger flamingos parch across the vast expanse of the shallow creek with its low-lying sand bars, to feed after the adult flamingos have had their fill and wandered off.

This sanctuary is one of the lesser known treasures of Dubai, and a visit to this flamingo haven will etch beautiful memories in your heart.
