Amateurs fighters from all walks of life have trained to get into the best shape of their lives. Now it’s time to slug it out for three rounds of pure, sweaty punishment.

Fancy watching a local radio DJ take on a top dog lawyer, a mum face off against at PT, a stay-at-home dad throw punches at a fitness junkie, or a journalist face-off against a PR director? Here’s how…

Back in February, Fighting Fit Dubai – a Dubai-based amateur boxing competition –made a callout to residents of the UAE to sign up for the third season on a reality TV show. After a whopping 300 applicants, the show’s producers whittled the ‘talent’ down to 24 contestants who have been involved in rigorous twice-daily training for almost a month.

You can catch all the blood, sweat and tears of the past few weeks at espn.com/fightingfitdubai, which has been documenting their intense journeys.

The show culminates in a heroic Fight Night showdown on April 26 – and everyone’s invited. Taking place on the epic open air terrace of Zabeel House by Jumeirah, The Greens, a full line-up of boxing fights featuring the Fighting Fit Dubai Blue Team vs Red Team, will decide who be crowned champions in the live grand finale to Dubai’s own reality show.

Hosted by local radio personality Chris McHardy, the evening event will see roaring crowds entertained by DJ Tarik Omar, food and drinks stalls provided by Zabeel House by Jumeirah, The Greens, VIP tables on offer, all set against the spectacle of everyday Dubai residents taking to the boxing ring to literally fight for glory.

“The atmosphere on Fight Night is electric,” explains Zoe Griffiths, Fighting Fit Dubai’s Exec Producer. “There is something truly gripping about watching a boxing match. But, knowing that the people in the ring only pulled on their boxing gloves a mere six weeks ago is totally captivating.”

Tickets start at Dhs250 and are available for purchase via Platinumlist. No black tie necessary and over 21s only.

Zabeel House by Jumeirah The Greens, April 26, Fri from 6pm. Tel: (04) 4573212. espn.com/fightingfitdubai and dubai.platinumlist.net

While the US is having its current drama about events that may or may not have happened at a high school party 30+ years ago, an actual important drama is brewing and being ignored.

“We’re accumulating risk in the Middle East by not getting at Iran’s proliferation,” [Brian Hook, the State Department's special representative for Iran] said. “There is something brazen about this missile behaviour, they’re not even hiding it. This sort of escalation is deeply concerning..."

"The Iranians have to decide are they a nation state or a revolution,” [The Saudi foreign minister] said, underlining that Iran had diverted virtually all its additional revenues from the removal of sanctions into its regional agenda, including support for the Houthi rebellion.

“If a missile is launched at Saudi Arabia and UAE what will be reaction be and how will we be defended?” said UAE Ambassador to the US Yousef Al Otaiba.

Maybe we could ask if the government can spend a few minutes considering this when they get done with their he-said, she-said partisan argument?

Possibly not putting himself in line to win one of DTCM's 2009 Excellence in Journalism awards, Yusuf Abdulla tells it like it is:

"There is also another side to Dubai’s booming market. Most large hotels are little more than dens of prostitution. Hotels are permitted to issue guest permits to bring people from outside. In order to attract customers, many hotels bring girls from Central Asia, Russia, Romania and Western Europe. These girls are provided free accommodation in the hotel for three months while they are expected to service hotel guests. Each hotel has a club where girls enter for free while men must pay 100 dirhams. Alcohol is available and consumed in large quantities. Customers come to these clubs to pick up foreign girls. It has been pointed out to the authorities in Dubai that they are sitting on a time bomb. Girls with such loose moral character are likely to be infected with the AIDS virus. There are already reports of AIDS spreading among the local population because of the behavior of emirati men who then infect their wives."

Interesting how the "girls" are the ones accused of "loose moral character". Not the pimps and slavers that traffic them to Dubai. Nor the hotels who act as brothelmasters. Nor their clients. Or even the unnamed people who "expect" them to provide this service.

An interesting choice of nationalities too. Along with Russia and the CIS: Eastern Europe, Morocco, Africa and China would be more like it.
