Always pushing the boundaries, Dubai is turning heads with its record-shattering indoor theme park. The largest of its kind, IMG Worlds of Adventure opened to the public on Wednesday in the city’s southern limits, along the E311 highway that joins Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Measuring some 1.5 million square feet, and costing $1 billion to build, the attraction is home to diversions aplenty, including areas and rides devoted to characters from Marvel Comics, Cartoon Network, and other entertainment franchises.

In true Dubai fashion, typical amusement park offerings are merely one function of the complex. Worlds of Adventure will also feature spaces dedicated to dining, movie theaters, and even shopping. But perhaps the most appealing feature for local families and tourists alike is the venue’s epic air-conditioned interior, a welcome oasis in Dubai’s scorching climate, particularly so in brutal summer months.
