Explore Dubai’s oldest neighborhood | Al Fahidi | Al Bastakiya | free on foot | cultural tour. Updated for 2024

Updated: March 9, 2024

Explore with us, Dubai’s oldest neighborhood, Al Fahidi historical district or heritage village which is also popularly known as Al Bastakiya. The tour is free on foot and gives you a glimpse of the past.

The amount of time it takes to explore Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood depends on what you do during your visit. Within the winding alleyways there are more than 50 ‘houses’ to explore.

Dubai was not that glamorous and glitzy as it is now. And this district holds memories of an era that pre-dates the federation of the emirates — before the union of the Emirati tribes in 1971 and a time when the pearl trade flourished in the region.

Walk through the narrow winding alleyways and you come across ochre-coloured buildings made of palm wood, coral, mud or gypsum. Look up and you will see the wind towers on top of the houses.

The area is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Emirati history and culture. With several cultural centres and small museums dotted around, there are ample opportunities to get an insight into Dubai and the wider region.

📍You can reach the place via the Al Fahidi bus station or through the Al Fahidi Metro Station nearby. Guests who prefer to drive are duly accommodated with parking areas.
