A brand new tower is coming near Burj Al Arab to watch fireworks shows and engage in extreme sports in Dubai – but what does Dubai Holding’s 550-metre Burj Jumeira tower look like, and how was it designed?

HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, inaugurated Burj Jumeira on 31 January, 2019. HH Sheikh Mohammed also reviewed plans for the Burj Jumeira tower and its surrounding area, which will be called Downtown Jumeira.

Dubai Holding, which is the developer of Burj Jumeira, said HH Sheikh Mohammed described the tower and Downtown Jumiera as “a continuation of Dubai’s vision for becoming a city of the future distinguished by its intelligent design and cohesive infrastructure and network”.

Among the highlights of Burj Jumeirah is its design, with Dubai Holding’s chairman HE Abdulla Al Habbai stating that HH Sheikh Mohammed has “left his fingerprint on the project”.

Burj Jumeira’s design is inspired by the ripples of the UAE’s desert sand dunes and its flowing oases. The tower’s façade will be covered with digital displays that can be utilised for various occasions and celebrations, Dubai Holding said.

One of its major design features is the crown, which Dubai Holding said will sit 450-metres high and be capable of expanding for various capacities and events. Dubai Holding said the crown will use technology to allow its “inner surfaces to be transformed into fully immersive and interactive displays”.

Multiple observation decks will be built within Burj Jumeira to provide 360° views of Dubai’s panorama. The observation decks will go beyond the traditional concept of observation decks and offer interactivity to visitors.

However, without a doubt a major highlight of Burj Jumeira will be its base – the base has been designed in the outline of HH Sheikh Mohammed’s fingerprint, and will host various social, cultural, and artistic events. The base will also be home to numerous entertainment options, including water fountains and a terraced outdoor amphitheatre, and is designed to host interactive lighting and fireworks displays.

Surrounding the base of Burj Jumeira will be a fully integrated and vibrant retail component. Burj Jumeira will be the centrepiece of Downtown Jumeira, which will boast connectivity as a central component. Downtown Jumeira will be linked to the tower with a connected pathway, allowing access to the Sharaf DG station of Dubai Metro as well as all the way through to Burj Al Arab.

Construction will kick off immediately, according to Dubai Holding, which said that Phase 1 of the development is due to be delivered in 2023.
