Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the heart of Dubai, is a renowned wetland reserve teeming with migratory birds, especially Greater Flamingos. It’s a protected area spanning 6.2 square kilometers at the mouth of Dubai Creek, featuring diverse habitats like mangroves, mudflats, lagoons, and salt flats. The sanctuary is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and a crucial stopover for over 450 bird species on the East Africa-West Asia Flyway.
What to see
Greater Flamingos: Thousands of these vibrant pink birds gather at the sanctuary, especially during the cooler winter months (November-March), for breeding and feeding.
Other Bird Species: Over 450 species, including seagulls, cormorants, ospreys, ducks, mynas, stilts, wagtails, herons, egrets, and more, can be spotted throughout the year.
Mangroves: These vital coastal ecosystems serve as nurseries for marine life and are home to specialized flora and fauna.
Other Wildlife: The sanctuary also hosts crustaceans, small mammals (like the Red Fox, Ethiopian Hedgehog, and Arabian Cap Hare), fish, reptiles, and insects.
Visiting the sanctuary
Admission: Entrance to the sanctuary is free.
Best time to visit: The cooler winter months (November-March) offer the best opportunity to observe migratory birds and flamingos.
Hides: The sanctuary provides well-maintained bird hides and viewing platforms for visitors to observe wildlife peacefully.
Feeding time: Flamingos are fed between 10 AM and 4 PM.
Opening hours:
Winter Season (November – March): 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM
Summer Season (April – September): 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Things to bring: Binoculars, camera, sunscreen, light clothing, and snacks/water are recommended.
Getting there: The sanctuary can be reached by car, taxi, or metro (nearest stations: Creek or Max) followed by a taxi ride.
