Today we are at Dubai Design Week in D3 that is Dubai Design District

DUBAI DESIGN WEEK, region’s largest creative festival is held in Dubai’s own design district under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. D3 is the destination of anything and everything related to designs.

FROM THE HEART – this giant heart that beats in d3 is made up of 3248 pieces of ROCA porcelain sanitary ware. Yes it’s reused to uphold innovation, design and sustainability. Designing sustainable buildings and objects is showing love and care for the environment and society, an enlightenment which originates from the heart.

PIXEL – At times of constant change there’s need of an all purpose tool like this that can be used as a high table for workshop, a desk, a shelf store or even a counter for a party! The calligraphy demonstrates the theme and purpose of the building block that is ‘friends’

MALAAB DAD – This installation is a play hub for children inspired by Arabic letters. malaab means playground in Arabic. The beauty of Arabic language is shown through various interactive designs. Akwan is a social movement, with a mission to instill the love of Arabic in children’s hearts; through play, educational tools and workshops.

ABWAAB LEBANON – Abwab meaning doors in Arabic. This is an interactive wall portraying socio political barriers in Lebanese society.

SAAF ABWAB (SAUDI ARABIA) – a colourful installation is created by local craftsmen and architects.Its composed of different woven styles of innovative textile mixing color scale and texture. The mesh outside were inviting people to climb onto the surface. Visitors were seen inside the cocoon inspecting the textures of the installation. It was a dynamic game of light and shadow.

MBR-D3 in D3 Central – This installation holding a prominent position in Design district is a multi layer portrait of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the ruler of Dubai made of pure wool and silk. seven exclusive editions of MBR have been handcrafted by the maker Iwan Maktabi and will make their way to some of the region’s most exclusive art collections. Contributions raised will fund a design scholarship at the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI).

MERCHANT AND MAKERS MARKET by Ripe Market – It highlights entrepreneurial ventures and supports small local businesses, designers, artists, jewellers etc which forms 50 UAE based brands.

QISSA GHAR / ABWAAB INDIA – This is the most Instagrammed and popular installation of Dubai design week named Qissa Ghar meaning house of stories. It represents the vast cultures, religions, philosophies and myths representing India. It is made of khadi hand spun natural fiber cloth from India adorned with wood carvings and lamps from old materials

BARJEEL – This is a 6 meters tall installation is a wind tower which brought cool air down in the base and is made from layers of reused cardboard. It has maximum exposure to natural light and winds being situated in the north terrace of D3

The event showcased DISCOVER EXPO 2020 DUBAI pavilion, giving visitors a taste of the largest event in the Arab world’s history.

AUDI INNOVATION HUB – Audi’s first full electric car Audi e-tron, which equally considers our environment and comfort was showcased at Audi Innovation Hub, the design of which was inspired by audietrons power comfort and silent interiors. This hub was a venue for the program of Audi Innovation Talks and a place to discover the winning projects of the annual Audi Innovation Award.

Tashkeel studio had workshops in carpentry, Italian shoe factory, ceramics and upholstery

Dubai Design Week had 19000 visitors with over 200 activities, ranging from architectural installations to design exhibitions, trade fairs, talks, panel discussions and conferences. There were 60 workshops on robotics, ceramics, pottery, recycling & up cycling, 3D printing, wax carving, metalsmith, silver filing show. There were 13 installations with exhibits from UAE, India, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Bahrain and Lebanon.

How’s this event relevant? Architects, designers, 3D visualizers, leaders and experts think design can shape our future, designed world can assist us when natural resources become scarce. Design can also bring the ancient and modern together.
